Indications/Use: Acute and chronic psychosis
Usual Dosage: 200mg per day, up to 1g per day
Side effects: Sedation, blurred vision, photo sensitivity

Mellaril
Indication/Use: Antipsychotic
Usual Dosage: 50 – 100mg 2x daily, up to 800mg daily
Side effects: Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, sedation, blurred vision
Interactions/Contraindications: Other phenothiazines, diuretics increase risk of dehydration
Patient teaching/Labs: May cause drowsiness
Haldol
Indications/Use: Antipsychotic
Usual Dosage: 0.5 – 5mg 2-3 x daily, up to 100mg daily
Side effects: Seizures, extra pyramidal reactions, blurred vision
Interactions/Contraindications: CNS depression with alcohol and other depressants
Patient teaching/Labs: May cause drowsiness, avoid alcohol
Artane
Indications/Use: Antiparkison agent
Usual Dosage: 6 – 10mg daily divided in 3 doses
Side effects: Dizziness, nervousness, blurred vision, nausea
Interactions/Contraindications: Epilepsy, resp. disease, pregnancy or lactation
Patient teaching/Labs: Avoid alcohol
Ativan
Indications/Use: Antianxiety, sedative/hypnotic
Usual Dosage: 1 – 3mg daily 2-3 x daily
Side effects: Apnea, cardiac arrest, drowsiness
Interactions/Contraindications: CNS suppressant, alcohol, analgesics
Patient teaching/Labs: May cause drowsiness, avoid alcohol
Cogentin
Indications/Use: Antiparkinson
Usual Dosage: 1 – 2mg/daily divided in 2 doses
Side effects: Blurred vision, dry eyes, constipation
Interactions/Contraindications: Antihistamines, phenothiazines, TCA antidepressants
Patient teaching/Labs: May cause drowsiness, avoid antacids
Risperdal
Indications/Use: Antipsychotic (schizophrenia)
Usual Dosage: 1mg/2 x daily, after 3rd day increase to 3mg/2 x daily
Side effects: Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, aggressive behavior
Interactions/Contraindications: Hypersensitivity, liver dysfunction, pregnancy
Patient teaching/Labs: May cause drowsiness, avoid alcohol
Restoril
Indications/Use: Sedative/Hypnotic (insomnia)
Usual Dosage: 15 – 30mg @ bedtime
Side effects: Hangover, lethargy, blurred vision
Interactions/Contraindications: CNS depression with alcohol, antidepressant
Patient teaching/Labs: Avoid nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol
Ambien
Indications/Use: Sedative/Hypnotic (insomnia)
Usual Dosage: 10mg @ bedtime
Side effects: Amnesia, “drugged” feeling
Interactions/Contraindications: increase CNS depression with antidepressants and sedative/hypnotics
Patient teaching/Labs: Avoid alcohol, go to sleep after taking
Prolixin
Indications/Use: Antipsychotic
Usual Dosage: 12.5 – 25mg may be repeated every 1-4 weeks
Side effects: Extra pyramidal reactions, photo sensitivity
Interactions/Contraindications: Increase CNS depression with alcohol, antihistamines
Patient teaching/Labs: May cause drowsiness, use sun cream when in sun
Depakote
Indications/Use: Anticonvulsant (seizures)
Usual Dosage: 5 – 15mg/kg/day
Side effects: Hepatotoxicity, indigestion, toxicity
Interactions/Contraindications: Increase risk for bleeding with antiplatelet agent, CNS depression
Patient teaching/Labs: Avoid taking aspirin, contact doctor if anorexia or abdominal pain occurs
Dilantin
Indications/Use: Anticonvulsant
Usual Dosage: 300 – 400mg/daily
Side effects: Ataxia, nystagmus, hypotension
Interactions/Contraindications: Hyper sensitivity, alcohol intolerance
Patient teaching/Labs: May cause drowsiness, avoid alcohol
Clozaril
Indications/Use: Antipsychotic (schizophrenia)
Usual Dosage: 300 – 450mg/daily
Side effects: Seizures, myocarditis, leukopenia
Interactions/Contraindications: Malnourished PTS or PTS with cardio, hepatic, or renal disease
Patient teaching/Labs: Avoid alcohol
Lithium
Indications/Use: Antimanic (mania)
Usual Dosage: 300mg/3 x daily
Side effects: Seizures, arrhythmias
Interactions/Contraindications: Severe cardio or renal disease, NSAIDs high risk for toxicity
Patient teaching/Labs: ECG evaluation before and after treatment if prior heart condition
Aricept
Indications/Use: Anti Alzheimer’s agent (dementia)
Usual Dosage: 10mg/daily
Side effects: Headache, diarrhea, nausea
Interactions/Contraindications: Cardiac disease, extreme muscle relaxation with succinycholine
Patient teaching/Labs:
Elavil
Indications/Use: Antidepressant
Usual Dosage: 75 – 150mg/daily
Side effects: Lethargy, sedation, arrhythmias
Interactions/Contraindications: Narrow angle glaucoma

Buspar
Indications/Use: Antianxiety
Usual Dosage: 5mg/3 x daily
Side effects: Dizziness, drowsiness, headache, fatigue
Interactions/Contraindications: Use with MAIOs may result in hypertension, hypersensitivity

Paxil
Indications/Use: Antianxiety/Antidepressant
Usual Dosage: 20mg/daily
Side effects: Anxiety, dizziness, drowsiness
Interactions/Contraindications: Serious reactions with MAOIs, hypersensitivity
Patient teaching/Labs: Avoid alcohol, wear sunglasses and sun cream when in sun
Zoloft
Indications/Use: Antidepressant
Usual Dosage: 50mg/daily or up to 200mg/daily depending on response
Side effects: Dizziness, drowsiness, sexual dysfunction
Interactions/Contraindications: Serious reactions with MAOIs, hypersensitivity
Patient teaching/Labs: Avoid alcohol, wear sunglasses and sun cream when in sun
Prozac
Indications/Use: Antidepressant
Usual Dosage: 10 – 60mg/daily
Side effects: Seizures, anxiety, drowsiness
Interactions/Contraindications: Discontinue MAOIs for 14 days prior to use
Patient teaching/Labs: Avoid alcohol, wear sunglasses and sun cream when in sun
Tofranil
Indications/Use: Antidepressant
Usual Dosage: 25 – 50mg/3 x daily
Side effects: Drowsiness, fatigue, arrhythmias
Interactions/Contraindications: Hypersensitivity, may cause serious side effect in conjunction with MAOIs
Patient teaching/Labs: Monitor baseline and periodic ECGs in patients with heart disease
Tegretol
Indications/Use: Anticonvulsant
Usual Dosage: 200mg/2 x daily
Side effects: Ataxia, drowsiness
Interactions/Contraindications: Hypersensitivity, use with MAOI inhibitors may increase tension

Indications/Use: Anticonvulsant
Usual Dosage: No more than 20mg/daily
Side effects: Behavioral changes, drowsiness, ataxia
